The Archangel Michael is crucial in my Spiritual life, out of curiosity for Angels and their functions on earth, I was led back to the faith- the loving Spirit and guidance of the Archangels- particularly Archangel Michael has made me come back and believe in Jesus Christ. Angels are crucial in touching our heart- so that we would once again seek, find and glorify our Creator.
Here is an attempt to compile some of the information and documentation about Archangel Michael. Though we are but humans and could only hope to fathom, it is the desire of the Good Humans Club to write about the true, the good and the beautiful– what better topic than the Angels of God themselves.
Archangel Michael is the only one that the Bible calls ” Archangel”, the word ” Archangel” means ” chief messenger” or ” chief Angel”- he is referred to as the Chief Prince of Angels. ( Dan. 10:13)
The Archangel Michael is the one identified as the angel opposing Satan, he is often depicted in paintings as the Archangel who slays Satan during the battle of the Armageddon. In the Bible, the Archangel Michael says 4 words which is found in Jude 9, which is, ” The Lord Rebuke You!”
Archangel Michael is one of the most interesting Angel there is, seeing that he is the military commander of the Angels. In John’s apocalypse, there is a great war in heaven, Archangel Michael and other angels were fighting Satan (dragon) and other fallen angels. In here, Satan and his hordes are too weak, they lost ground in heaven and was thrown down on earth as recorded by Rev. 12:7-9.
Archangel Michael was mentioned in the Bible, specifically three times in the Book of Daniel, because of this Christians also give him respect. While it is noted the Angels should not be worshipped, remembering them is a crucial part of faith because Archangels belong to God- and is a part of God.
There are many churches and sanctuaries that were created and built by Christians during the 4th century. Michael the Archangel was seen as a healing Angel. A protector and a leader in the army of God.
St Michael’s Church in Olomouc, Czech Republic
The St. Michael’s Church in Olomouc, Czech Republic dates back to the 13th century, and was given a baroque makeover in 1703. It has a green ageing dome with an Archangel Michael image on the front and a painting of the pregnant Virgin Mary. The church building is open to the public for viewing.
Rabbis consider Archangel Michael as a defender in the time of the biblical patriarchs and even today. It was Archangel Michael who rescued Abraham from the furnace which he had been thrown by Nimrod. It was also Archangel Michael who protected Sarah from being defiled by Abimelech.
In the Jewish tradition, it is believed that Archangel Michael prevented Isaac from being sacrificed by substituting a ram in his place. And it was also Archangel Michael who saved Jacob from being killed by Samael while he was still in his mother’s womb. Michael the Archangel also protected Jacob against the evil intent of Laban.
It is also Michael who destroyed the army of Sennacherib.
Archangel Michael is the only Angel whose name was mentioned in three major religions in the world. Archangel Michael is present in the Torah( Judaism), Bible ( Christianity), and the Qur’an ( Islam).
Michael is often depicted in Church buildings and important city centers and buildings, often seen as an exceptionally strong angel who was given by God the ability to protect and defend those who love God.
St. Michael’s Church, Tallinn
St. Michael’s Church or St. Michael’s Swedish Church is a Lutheran Church that is used by a Swedish Congregation in Tallinn, Estonia. This church has existed since the Middle Ages. The church has witnessed many upheavals and was once confiscated by the Russians and turned into a garrison, but eventually it was given back to the Swedish Congregation.
St. Michael’s is a smaller, simpler church, but well worth a visit. Established by the Swedes, with strong ties historically to Sweden, the history of the church follows Sweden’s interest in this part of the Baltics, from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
It is said in the Bible and ancient writings that God often sends Michael to help people who are facing urgent needs during a crisis. You can call Archangel Michael each time there is an emergency and you need help. Archangel Michael will give you the courage and strength to deal with it.
This is the reason why a lot of churches have been erected and named after Archangel Michael. During various crisis in history, it is said that Archangel Michael intercedes and helps humanity along with other Angels under the direction and guidance of God.
Archangel Michael holds the mighty “Word”, by the utterance of which God created heaven and earth, he is also the angel who spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai (Act 7:38). Archangel Michael is often depicted in art as a warrior, he is often depicted as a male warrior, with a sword and ready for armour in combat as inspired by the Book of Revelation in the Bible.
Archangel Michael is invoked for protection, especially from lethal enemies. He is also the patron of soldiers, police and doctors.
Church of Michael the Archangel in Rhodes, Greece
The Church of Michael the Archangel in Rhodes, Greece is situated in a quiet, small and peaceful community where bread is still baked in the old wood-fire ovens. People living near the church still practice their traditional ceremonies. The province of Archangelos has an estimated 6,000 inhabitants and the church of the Archangel Michael dominates the center of the village which dates back to 1845.
St. Michael’s Church in Budapest
Although the church was small in size, its interior design and decoration are incredible. Prominent on the wall against the entrance, on the second-floor terrace, there is a beautiful church organ. The murals and frescoes as well as the furniture and sculptures are very impressive. St Michael’s Church was built by the Dominicans back in the 1700’s. It is not that large in size but still beautiful with a notable organ used for many choir and organ concerts.
In Daniel 12, the Angel speaks of the end of the world and the Antichrist says ” At that time shall Michael rise up, the great prince, who standeth for the children of thy people”.
Apocalypse 12:17, ” And there was a great battle in heaven, Michael and his angels fought with the dragon. ” St. John tells of a great conflict that will happen at the end of time. Some Biblical scholars believe that Archangel Michael was the cherub who stood at the gate of paradise, ” to keep the way of the tree of life ( Genesis 3:24), the angel through whom God published the Decalogue to his chosen people, the angel who stood in the way against Balaam in Numbers 22:22 and the angel who routed the army of Sennacherib ( 2 Kings 19:35)
In Scriptural passages, Christians give St. Michael four offices. The first is to fight against Satan, the second is to rescue the souls of the faithful from the power of the devil especially at the hour of death. Third is to be the champion of God’s people, the fourth is to call away from earth and bring men’s souls to judgment. cf. P. Bonaventura, op, cit. believe that Archangel Michael is the Prince of the Seraphim, the first of the angelic choirs, while St. Thomas Aquinas believes he is the prince of the lowest choir of the angels.
In traditional beliefs, Archangel Michael is said to have caused a medicinal spring to spout at Chairotopa near Colossae, where all the sick who bathed and invoked the blessed Trinity and Archangel Michael were cured. It is said that it was Archangel Michael who has drawn from the rock at Colossae, the present Khonas, on the Lycus. Some unbelievers tried to destroy this sanctuary, but the Archangel Michael split the rock by lightning to give a new bed to the stream, and sanctified the waters forever which came from the gorge. The Greeks say that this apparition happened in the middle of the first century, and they celebrate a feast in commemoration of it every September 6. In Pythia in Bithynia and in other places in Asia, there are hot springs dedicated to Archangel Michael. In Constantinople, Archangel Michael is believed to be a great heavenly physician.
St. Michael’s Church Cluj-Napoca, Romania
This church presents the high degree of central European culture and civilization from Transylvania’s past. St. Michael’s Church in Cluj, Napoca in Romania is a Gothic Style Roman Catholic Church. It is the second largest church after the Black church in Brasov in Transylvania, Romania.
In traditional and modern art, the Archangel Michael is depicted as an angelic warrior, who is fully armed with a helmet, sword, and a shield, standing over a defeated dragon whom he pierces with a lance. He is also depicted as someone holding a pair of scales that he uses to weigh the souls of the departed.
Archangel Michael is also said to have a role during the time of judgment in the book of life. His feast is celebrated every September 29 during the 18th Century. Some churches are still celebrating this in different parts of the world. Some parishes would have processions on this day, as well as baked cakes.
Archangel Michael exalts the supremacy of God, and His power, and the importance of obeying an Almighty and Sovereign God. Archangel Michael leads the battle against the fallen angels. Archangel Michael is the supreme general, or the supreme leader of the angelic host in their battle against Satan.
Archangel Michael has to do with the care of the human race, defending us against the fallen angels.
Orthodox Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Sokolowsko in Poland
The Orthodox Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Sokolowsko is probably one of the most interesting and charming church open today. It was built between 1900 and 1901. The consecration of the Orthodox Church was made in September 3, 1901 by the chaplain of the Russian Embassy in Berlin Fr. Priest of Aleksa von Maltzow.
The Church was served by the faithful until the end of the 30’s, but after World War II it was abandoned and forgotten. In August 1996 it came a private property and a holiday home. But the Orthodox Church in Poland became aware of the existence of the Church in Sokolowsko in 1989 and it was redeemed on April 5, 1997 by the Archbishop of Wrocław and Szczecin, Jeremiah, made the consecration of a new cross of the Venerated Orthodox Church (first taken off in the years 80).
Today the Orthodox Church serves as a parish temple for the faithful of Sokołowska and the region of the Polish-Czech borderland. There is also a place of prayer for participants of youth camps and tourists from other regions of Poland and from abroad visitors to Sokołowsko.
PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
